I survived!

Day one of the 2013-2014 school year is in the books.  Things went fairly smooth.

Our school is on an A/B day schedule with four 90 minute periods every day.  Today, those 90 minutes nearly did me in.  We have some new policies in our school, uniforms and structured movement, so those had to be reiterated all day.  This meant a lot of time with my hands in the air.  I love it, but I am out of interpreter shape.

I did make sure that I was sitting actively and that if I was standing I wasn’t locking my knees and shifting my weight around but standing properly too.  I really have to say that while I’m exhausted, it’s more mentally than physically.  My brain is mushy 😀     ….okay, okay…my shoulders are a little tired too.

Looking forward to tomorrow. New classes. New teachers that I’ve never interpreted for.

I really do love my job.  Mushy brain and all…

One more week…

This summer has gone by quickly!  I had an amazing summer break.  One more week until the kids are back at school.  I have a few days left of free time before I report.  Here are some highlights of my summer.

  • I traveled to New York City for the first time.
  • Am a Google Glass Explorer now. (Total Nerd Awesomeness)
  • I attended Silent Weekend in Orlando and learned a ton of stuff. It was tough, no voice for three days. I did it though. 🙂
  • I attended the Interpreter Project‘s Summer Institute.  Again, learning tons of stuff! If you live in Florida and haven’t taken the opportunity to utilize this great resource, please, check it out.  They do wonderful things for Educational Interpreters.  The Summer Institute was amazing and I can’t wait for next year.

One of the most important things I learned this summer (at Summer Institute)  was to sit and stand properly. Sitting and standing for hours on end can be tiring if you are doing it wrong. I learned the proper ways to rest between classes as well.  A lot of the same things can be found in my previous post about being “Happy and Healthy“.  If you ever have the chance to take a workshop with Babetta Popoff, DO!  She will teach you things about yourself you had no idea, and she’ll make you laugh while you learn.  You can check out her website at www.liveinauthenticity.com. I really have noticed that being positive makes life a lot easier than finding or expecting faults.  Sure, we all have our “Debbie Downer” days and that’s okay.  Just make sure it doesn’t become who you are.  Drama free is the way to be!! (My mantra)

I’m looking forward to the school year. Can’t wait to see what I’ll learn along with my student.
